About the Breed

A small dog with a distinct story

The Biewer Terrier is a relatively modern companion breed with German origins, a Yorkshire Terrier derivation, and an unmistakable tri-colour coat.

Origin

Born in Germany, 1984

The Biewer Terrier traces its origins to Germany in 1984, when Mr. and Mrs. Biewer — Yorkshire Terrier breeders — began selectively breeding dogs that carried a distinctive tri-colour pattern.

Over time, the breed developed its own identity, separate from the Yorkshire Terrier it descended from. It was developed as a companion breed, prized for its elegant appearance, silky flowing coat and affectionate disposition. The breed's name honours the family who first cultivated it.

Today, the Biewer Terrier is recognised by a number of registries and is appreciated around the world as a small, devoted companion. While it remains less common than many toy breeds, those who live with one often become lifelong enthusiasts.

Characteristics

Small, refined and quietly elegant

The Biewer Terrier is a toy companion breed, but its presence is greater than its size suggests.

Size and build

The Biewer Terrier is small and refined, with a body that is compact yet balanced. It is light enough to be carried, sturdy enough to enjoy daily activity, and proportioned for an elegant, flowing movement rather than exaggerated toy appearance.

Coat and colour

The breed's coat is long, silky and flowing, with a characteristic tri-colour pattern of white, black and gold. The coat does not shed heavily in the way many breeds do, but it does require consistent grooming to stay in good condition.

Movement and expression

A well-bred Biewer Terrier moves with a lively, free movement and carries its head proudly. The expression is bright and intelligent, with dark, alert eyes that reflect the breed's attentive, curious nature.

Companion qualities

Above all, the Biewer Terrier is a companion. It thrives on being near its people, adapts well to family life, and forms close bonds. It is not a breed that does well when left alone for long stretches.

Appearance

Tri-colour, silky and refined

The breed's appearance is one of balanced refinement — never exaggerated, always elegant.

Tri-colour markings

The Biewer Terrier's most recognisable feature is its tri-colour coat — white, black and gold. The white is typically distributed across the belly, legs and portions of the face and chest, while the black and gold pattern the head, ears and body. Markings vary from dog to dog; the precise pattern is less important than overall balance and clarity.

A silky, flowing coat

The coat is single, soft and silky — falling in a natural line along the body when kept long. It does not have the harsh outer coat of some terrier breeds. Many companion owners choose a shorter puppy clip for ease of care, which is perfectly acceptable for a non-show dog and does not affect the dog's wellbeing.

A small, refined build

The build is compact and balanced, with a topline that remains level in movement. The head is refined without being fine, the eyes are dark and expressive, and the ears are set to carry alertly. Overall, the impression is of an elegant small dog, not a fragile one.

Personality

Affectionate, cheerful and people-oriented

While appearance is what first draws many to the breed, it is the personality that keeps them devoted for life.

The Biewer Terrier is a true companion — happiest when with its family, alert without being yappy, and adaptable to many homes when its needs for closeness, grooming and gentle structure are met. We explore temperament in detail in the next chapter.
